Sales of hybrid and electric vehicles accounted for two thirds (66%) of all car sales in Belgium last year, new data from Statbel has revealed.
Of the 456,278 cars sold in Belgium during 2024, 300,647 were hybrid and electric cars. This is a notable increase on five years previous – in 2019, hybrid and electric vehicles accounted for 43,902 of 557,970 cars sold, or just 8% of the overall market.
As sales of hybrids and EVs grow, they have come at the expense of petrol and diesel cars – petrol sales accounted for 28% of the market last year, a decrease of 17 percentage points on 2023, and a 62-percentage-point decline on 2019.
The market share of diesel cars has also seen a significant decline, accounting for just 5% of sales last year, compared to 31% in 2019.

New vehicle registrations
Overall, there were 568,059 new vehicle registrations in Belgium in 2024, with registrations of passenger cars seeing a 5% decline from 2023, according to Statbel.
Among these, electric car registrations rose by 37%, reaching 127,908 units, compared to 93,086 in 2023. However, registrations of new hybrid passenger cars saw a 10% decrease, to 172,739 units, down from 191,522 the previous year. Petrol car registrations fell by 17%.
Company cars
Some 70% of hybrid and electric vehicles were registered by businesses last year, the data showed, and 30% by private individuals, however if electric vehicles are taken on their own, some 86% (or 127,908) cars were registered by businesses, and 14% by individuals.
Among hybrid cars, 100,944 were company cars (58%), and 71,795 were registered by private individuals (42%). Read more here.
