Austria has seen a surge in new car registrations this year

Austria reported a 9.0% increase in new passenger car registrations in the period from January to July 2025, with 167,918 new cars registered, according to new data from Statistics Austria.

In July alone, registrations were up by close to a third (31.6%), with some 24,867 new cars registered, and electric and hybrid models showing the fastest growth.

Alternative drive systems

“Almost 60% of all passenger cars newly registered between January and July have an alternative drive system,” commented Thomas Burg, director general of statistics at Statistics Austria.

“Petrol hybrid cars were particularly in demand, accounting for almost a third of all new car registrations in the first seven months of the year and recording a 44.0% increase in registrations, but pure electric cars also achieved a 45.2% increase, accounting for more than a fifth of all registrations.”

Registrations of conventional petrol and diesel cars fell by 17.5% in the first seven months of the year, and currently hold a market share of 40.5% of all new car registrations.

According to Statistics Austria‘s data, the main buyers of cars in the first seven months of the year were ‘legal entities, companies and regional authorities’, which accounted for 63.7% of all new car registrations, while private owners accounted for 36.3%, including nearly 30% of electric cars.

Popular cars

In terms of the makes of car being registered, meanwhile, in the period from January to June, VW led overall passenger car registrations (14.2%), followed by Skoda (10.7%), BMW (7.4%), and Audi (6.4%).

The most popular electric cars included BMW (12.2%), VW (11.5%), Tesla (10.1%), Skoda (9.1%), and BYD (8.7%).

As for the car brands that saw the biggest increase in registrations, Cupra (+99.6%) doubled its registrations compared to last year, followed by Renault (+46.8%), Skoda (+26.9%), Dacia (+15.1%), BMW (+13.0%), Audi (+11.9%), Toyota (+2.3%), VW (+1.4%) and Mercedes (+0.8%). Read more here.
