Austria‘s population stood at 9,198,214 as of 1 January 2025, a 0.4% increase (or +39,464 people) on the same period last year, new data from Statistics Austria has found.

While the population has seen a year-on-year increase, the gain is lower than the previous year, when the population grew by 53,978 people (0.6%).

Slower rate of growth

“Austria’s population continues to grow, albeit at a slower rate,” commented Tobias Thomas, Statistics Austria director general. “In 2024, the population increased by 0.4% and reached almost 9.2 million. Growth was therefore lower than in previous years.”

Vienna recorded the highest population growth among all Austrian provinces, bringing the capital’s population to 2,028,399, the data showed.

“Vienna once again had the highest percentage population growth of all the federal provinces at +1.1%, while the population in Carinthia only grew slightly by 0.1% and even declined marginally in Burgenland,” Thomas added.

A total of 1,855,624 people with non-Austrian citizenship were living in the country as of 1 January this year, accounting for 20.2% of the population (up from 19.7% a year earlier).

Vienna, Vorarlberg, and Salzburg boasted the highest percentages of foreign nationals, with Vienna alone having 36.4% of its population hailing from other countries. Read more here.
