Chocolate prices in Germany rose by 39.9% between 2020 and 2024, meaning that consumers have to pay more for Easter treats, new data from Destatis, the federal statistics office, has found.

Easter eggs in particular were 38.5% more expensive in 2024 than in 2020, the data showed, while chocolate bars rose by 31.8%, and chocolate blocks and other products jumped by 45.9%.

In general, confectionery prices were 29.1% higher in 2024 than they were at the start of the decade, with gummy bears and chewing gum seeing prices rise by 39.1%, and candy up 15.1%.

Overall food prices rose by 33.2%, and general consumer prices increased by 19.3% during the same period, according to Destatis.

Year-on-year increase

Looking at a more recent comparison, between March 2024 and March 2025, chocolate prices were 16.7% higher, with chocolate bars rising by 25.1% and other chocolate products seeing a 11.1% increase.

Easter egg prices were 2.5% higher, year-on-year.

Confectionery prices were up 3.1% in March, compared to the same month the previous year, with candies rising by 1.7%, and gummies down 2.3%.

Overall, food prices in March 2025 were up 3.0% from a year earlier, while consumer prices rose by 2.2%. Read more here.
