Some 9.2% of the EU population were unable to keep their homes adequately heated in 2024, new data from Eurostat has revealed.
This compares to 10.6% of EU citizens that were unable to keep their home warm in 2023, the data showed.
The highest proportion of individuals struggling to heat their homes was found in Bulgaria (19.0%) and Greece (19.0%), while other high percentages were recorded in Lithuania (18%) and Spain (17.5%), Eurostat noted.
In contrast, however, the lowest share of individuals that found it difficult to keep their homes warm was found in Finland (2.7%), followed by Poland (3.3%), Slovenia (3.3%), Estonia (3.6%) and Luxembourg (3.6%)
In terms of some of the EU’s largest economies, meanwhile, some 6.3% of Germans reported being unable to adequately heat their homes in 2024, as did 11.8% of French citizens. In Italy, some 8.6% of individuals struggled to keep their homes warm.
While the overall share of households unable to keep warm has declined slightly, the variation among EU member states indicates structural and regional differences in heating and energy access, affordability, and efficiency across the bloc. Read more here.
