Consumer confidence increases in Portugal, following four months of decline

Consumer confidence increased in Portugal in December, statistics body INE has said, following four months of decline.

All components that comprise the consumer confidence index rose in December, INE added, including expectations on the future evolution of the country’s economic situation and of households’ financial situation; opinions on the past evolution of households’ financial situation; and expectations on the future evolution of major purchases by households.

Future economic situation

Expectations regarding the future evolution of Portugal‘s economic situation also increased in December, following decreases observed between July and November.

The economic climate indicator experienced an increase in both November and December, rebounding from a decline observed in September and October.

The balance of expectations regarding households’ future financial situations also demonstrated an increase in the most recent month, following a period of decline observed from August to November.

On a sector-by-sector basis, confidence indicators saw an uptick in trade and services during this period. Conversely, the manufacturing industry and construction and public works sectors witnessed a decrease in confidence indicators.
