The European Greens have welcomed the decision to hold an emergency summit of European leaders, calling on EU governments to ensure that ‘Europe becomes both Trump-proof and Putin-proof’.
The leaders of France, the UK, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain and Denmark are set to meet in Paris to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, as well as US president Donald Trump’s announcement of planned bilateral negotiations with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
‘A peace project’
“Peace in Europe must come from Europe,” commented European Green Party co-chair Ciarán Cuffe. “The EU has always been a peace project. We must demonstrate our ability to stand up for the EU’s security, as well as for peace and universal values in our neighbourhood.
“The future of Ukraine and Europe cannot be left in the hands of Putin and Trump alone. Only the Ukrainian people, who have been the victim of Russia’s brutal and unprovoked invasion of their country, can set the terms for peace negotiations.”
European democracy
The meeting also comes following the Trump administration’s denigrating remarks about democracy in Europe, with the Greens calling on all European political parties to condemn the denigrating remarks from vice-president J.D. Vance about democracy and freedom of speech in the EU.
“The struggle of the Ukrainian people for freedom, peace and EU membership is our struggle,” added European Green Party co-chair Vula Tsetsi. “A just peace can only be guaranteed with the participation of Ukraine and Europe. Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine. Nothing about Europe without Europe.
“As Greens, we call on the European Commission and EU governments to step up their commitment to Ukraine and to Europe’s security, so that Europe becomes both Trump-proof and Putin-proof”. Read more here.
