Germany‘s tourism industry reported 496.1 million guest overnight stays last year, a new record high, according to Destatis, the country’s federal statistics office.
This marks a 1.9% increase compared to the previous year, and a 0.1% gain on the pre-pandemic year of 2019.
The number of overnight stays by foreign/international visitors stood at 85.3 million last year, a 5.4% increase on the previous year, however this was lower than in 2019.
International guests accounted for 17.2% of all visitors in 2024, compared to 16.6% in 2023 and 18.1% in 2019.
Domestic guest stays amounted to 410.8 million in 2024, meanwhile, reflecting 1.1% growth compared to the previous year and a 1.3% increase compared to 2019, the data showed.
Business types
‘A look at the different types of business shows that hotel businesses – i.e. hotels, inns and guest houses – have continued to recover, but remained slightly below the pre-crisis level of 2019,’ Destatis noted.
‘In 2024, they recorded 2.2% fewer overnight stays than in 2019, but 2.0% more than in 2023. The development was different for holiday accommodation and campsites: While holiday accommodation slightly exceeded the 2019 level (+2.6%), campsites were able to significantly increase their overnight stays compared to 2019 (+19.9%).’
Tourism in December 2024
In December 2024 alone, overnight stays in accommodation establishments totalled 31 million, a 3.6% increase on the corresponding month a year earlier, and 0.3% higher than in December 2019, according to the data.
Domestic overnight stays in December reached 24.6 million, up by 3.0% from the same month in 2023, while overnight stays by foreign guests rose by 6.0% to 6.4 million.
Destatis’ information covers accommodation establishments (hotels, inns and guest houses, holiday accommodation and similar accommodation facilities, campsites and other tourism-related accommodation) with at least ten beds or ten pitches on campsites. Read more here.
