Hungary reported the biggest increase in the price of pizza in the European Union in December 2023, compared to the same month the previous year, seeing a 13.4% gain.
According to the Eurostat data, which was released to coincide with the recent National Pizza Day, double-digit price increases on the popular snack were also observed in Luxembourg (+11.3%) and Latvia (+10.6%).
Germany (+9.9%), Austria (+9.5%) and Croatia (+9.0%) were other countries in which pizza prices saw a marked increase, year-on-year.
Just one country reported a decline in pizza prices in December – the Netherlands, where prices fell by 0.9%. Small increases were reported in Denmark (+0.6%) and Belgium (+1.0%).
At a European level, the average price of store-bought pizza and quiche increased by 5.9% in December 2023, compared to the same month the previous year, Eurostat said.
This marks a deceleration in the rate of inflation from the previous year, when prices were on average 15.9% higher in December 2022 compared to December 2021, Eurostat said.
