What country is the biggest wine exporter in Europe?

Italy was by far and away the biggest exporter of wine from the European Union in 2022, exporting a total of 2.2 billion litres, new data from Eurostat has found.

This represents 30% of the overall wine exports by EU members, it noted.

In second place, Spain exported 2.1 billion litres of wine in 2022 (29% of the EU total), while France exported 1.4 billion litres of wine (19% of the EU total).

Wine exports

During 2022, the European Union (EU) member countries collectively exported 7.2 billion litres of wine. Notably, nearly half of this volume, accounting for 3.2 billion litres (44%), found its way to destinations beyond the EU.

The primary recipients of these extra-EU wine exports were the United Kingdom, which received 0.7 billion litres (23% of extra-EU exports), followed closely by the United States with 0.7 billion litres (22%). Additionally, Russia received 0.3 billion litres (9%), and Canada imported 0.20 billion litres (6%).

Wine production

A total of 16.1 billion litres of wine was produced in the EU in 2022, with the top two wine producers – Italy and Spain – each contributing around five billion litres each (or 62% of the EU total), and France contributing 3.4 billion litres (or 20% of the EU total).

Other drinks producers of note included Germany, which accounted for 4% of wine produced in the EU last year, Portugal (>2%) and Hungary (<2%).
