Just 10.7% of the EU adult population – around one in ten – use public transport on a daily basis, new data from Eurostat has found.

According to the 2024 data, 11.6% of the EU’s adult population (those aged 16 or over) use public transport every week, 10.0% use it on a monthly basis, and 17.1% use it less than once a month.

More than half (50.6%) of the EU population didn’t use public transport at all in 2024.

Low public transport use

Cyprus boasted the highest share of adults not using public transport (85%), with low engagement also recorded in Italy (68.0%), Portugal (67.8%), France (65.1%), Slovenia (61.6%), and Greece (61.3%).

At the other end of the spectrum, Luxembourg reported the highest proportion of weekly users of public transport (23.1%), followed by Latvia (19.2%) and Estonia (18.2%).

According to Eurostat, the data relates to those that have used public transport in the past 12 months (as of 2024). Public transport in this instance refers to buses, trams, trains and underground/metro, but not to taxis or other vehicles that can be rented privately, such as bicycles. Read more here.
