More than half of Germans using generative AI regularly

Some 53% of Germans are using generative AI on a regular basis, a new study conducted by the TÜV Association in collaboration with Forsa has found.

According to the study, which surveyed 1,001 individuals aged 16 and older, the majority (82%) of those that access generative AI services – such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Midjourney – are doing so on personal computers or laptops.

Some 55% use a smartphone to access generative AI services, with just 2% using smart speakers for this purpose, and no respondents using smartwatches.

“Computers are often more powerful and therefore better suited to complex tasks, while the use of AI on smartphones offers above all a high level of flexibility and mobility,” commented Patrick Gilroy, artificial intelligence officer at the TÜV Association. “On smartphones, AI functions are often provided via apps that are specifically optimised for mobile use.”

User-friendly

Gilroy added that the user-friendly interface offered by AI applications on web browsers can make them easier to use and more effective, especially when it comes to complex tasks.

“Browser-based AI applications are often more versatile and can access more powerful hardware, which makes them ideal for demanding tasks such as extensive data analysis,” he added.

Smartphones offer a different set of advantages, however, enabling users to access generative AI applications on the move, such as text translation and voice recognition.

Security issues

According to the TÜV Association, security concerns associated with the use of generative AI differ depending on the device used, with smartphones more vulnerable to security risks because they are frequently connected to public networks.

“It is important that users are aware of the security risks and take appropriate measures to protect their data,” Gilroy added.

The survey was undertaken in October 2024, and surveyed 1,001 people between the ages of 16 and 75. Read more here.
