In 2023, guests spent some 678.6 million nights in short-term rental accommodation supplied by collaborative economy platforms including Airbnb, Booking.com, Expedia or TripAdvisor, in the European Union, according to new Eurostat data.
This marks a 13.8% increase on the previous year, when 596.5 million nights were spent in short-term rental accommodation.
In 11 of the 12 months of 2023, nights booked via these platforms were higher than the previous year, with the last quarter of 2023 seeing increases of more than 20%.
In October, for example, the nights spent in accommodation booked via online platforms was up 21.9% compared with October 2022, while November was 20% higher and December 25.8% higher.
According to Eurostat, the most popular regions for short-term rental accommodation booked via online platforms in the third quarter of 2023 were Jadranska Hrvatska in Croatia (23.7 million nights), Andalucía in Spain (14.0 million nights), and the French Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (12.2 million nights).
During the same quarter, among the top 20 regions, France had six of the most popular regions, Spain and Italy had five each, Greece had two, and Croatia and Portugal each had one region represented.
The information is sourced from monthly data on short-stay accommodation offered via online travel platforms for the third and fourth quarter of 2023 at the national level, published by Eurostat and collected from four private collaborative economy platforms as part of an agreement with the European Commission in March 2020.
