One in ten (10.6%) of the EU population struggled to keep their homes warm in 2023, new data from Eurostat has revealed.
This is a 1.3-percentage-point gain on the previous year, the data showed.
Residents in Spain (20.8%) and Portugal (20.8%) reported the highest percentages of individuals struggling to keep their households warm, followed by Bulgaria (20.7%), Lithuania (20.0%), and Greece (19.2%).
At the other end of the scale, countries with the lowest percentages were Luxembourg (2.1%), Finland (2.6%), Slovenia (3.6%), Austria (3.9%), and Estonia (4.1%), where residents were better able to maintain warm homes. Read more here.
At risk of poverty
Previous data indicated that In 2023, 16.2% of the EU population – or some 71.7 million people – were at risk of poverty.
At a regional level, 10 regions in the EU had a share of people at risk of poverty above 30%, according to the Eurostat data. Read more here.
