Some 16.9 million people stayed in tourist accommodation in Poland in the first half of 2024, a 3.4% increase on the same period last year, new data from Statistics Poland has found.

According to the findings, the largest proportion of tourists stayed in June – 3.8 million – which is a 5.1% increase on the corresponding month the previous year.

January saw the smallest number of tourists staying – 2.2 million – however this was also up (by 0.8%) on the same period the previous year.

Domestic and international tourists

Of the total number of tourists staying in accommodation establishments in the first six months of the year, some 80.5% were domestic tourists (13.6 million), while 19.5% were foreign tourists (3.3 million).

These numbers are up by 3.1% and 4.8%, respectively.

In terms of foreign tourists specifically, Europe accounted for 84.3% of international guests, of which 23.2% were Germans (767,900), 11.7% Ukrainians (387,000), and 9.6% were from the UK (316,500).

Mazowieckie Voivodship, which is home to the capital, Warsaw, attracted the most tourists, with 3.1 million overnight stays, followed by Małopolskie (2.7 million), Dolnośląskie (2.0 million), Pomorskie (1.6 million), Zachodniopomorskie (1.5 million), and Śląskie Voivodship (1.2 million). Eleven voivodships recorded an increase in visitors, with the highest growth (9.7%) in Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodship. The smallest increase was in Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodship (0.4%). In contrast, five voivodships saw a decline in tourist numbers, with the most significant drop (4.9%) in Lubelskie Voivodship.

In the first half of 2024, a total of 41.3 million overnight stays were recorded in Poland, representing a 2.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023. More than half of these stays, amounting to 22.7 million, took place in hotels.

Tourist accommodation

As of the end of July 2024, 10,354 tourist accommodation establishments were operating in Poland – some 5.6% more than a year ago.

Among these tourism establishments, the highest number was hotels (2,583), followed by guest rooms/private accommodation (2,263), other hotel establishments (1,049) and holiday centres (893). More data is available here.
