Popularity of camping and caravanning on the rise in the EU

While this type of accommodation accounted for just 13.4% of all nights spent in tourist accommodation, its popularity has risen – compared with 2015, nights spent at these outdoor areas increased by 28.5%, while nights spent at hotels, holidays or other short-stay accommodation went up by 23.4%.

Seasonal stays

Seasonal patterns are particularly notable when it comes to camping and caravanning. In 2025, the summer months – June through to August – accounted for 67% of all nights, totalling 277 million.

Activity typically begins to increase in March, peaks in August with 118 million nights, then gradually decreases through the autumn and winter months, with 40 million nights in September, 15 million in October, and about 5 million in December.

Geographical spread

Geographically, camping and caravanning are most prevalent in Western and Southern Europe. France led the EU in 2025, with 154 million nights spent at campsites and caravan parks, representing 37.2% of all EU nights in these types of accommodations. Spain followed with 49.8 million nights, Italy with 49.1 million, and Germany with 45 million.

Other top-ranking countries include the Netherlands, with 26.8 million nights, and Portugal, with 7.1 million. Read more here.
