Slovenia reported a 22.1% increase in current expenditure in environmental protection measures in 2023, compared to the previous year, new data from SURS, Slovenia’s statistics office, has found.
Total expenditure in environmental protection measures reached €1.015 billion, the highest value recorded to date, with 50.9% of this, or €516.5 million, allocated to waste management.
In terms of current expenditure, expenditure on the protection of ambient air and climate increased by 39.7%, from €214 million to €299 million, while expenditure for wastewater management decreased by 13.8%, dropping from €203 million to €175 million.
Waste management expenditure rose by 32.6%, from €389 million to €516 million, while expenditure for other purposes decreased by 4.0%, falling from €25 million to €24 million.
Gross investment
Gross investment in environmental protection measures totalled €474 million in 2023, with the biggest share of spend allocated to wastewater management, of €187 million, or 39.3% of the total.
Waste management investment rose by 11.1%, from €54 million to €60 million, while investment in other purposes grew by 35.6%, from €73 million to €99 million.
Integrated technologies accounted for 56.3% of the gross investment during the year, while end-of-pipe technologies represented 43.7%, the data showed.
Regional spend
In terms of where environmental protection measures were implemented on a regional basis, the Osrednjeslovenska region led with 58.5% of the gross investment, followed by Savinjska (10.0%) and Podravska (7.4%).
In terms of current expenditure, Savinjska contributed the highest share at 29.9%, followed by Osrednjeslovenska at 28.1% and Podravska at 17.2%. Read more here.
