The population of Spain grew by 0.88% in the third quarter of 2024, to stand at 48,946,035 inhabitants as of 1 October, new data from INE, the Spanish statistics office, has found.
The overall population increased by 134,890 in the period.
The male population reached 23,995,107, according to the data, growing by 0.93%, while the female population increased to 24,950,928, marking a 0.83% rise.
The number of foreign nationals residing in Spain amounted to 6,735,487, showing an increase of 4.83% compared to the previous year.
Immigrants and emigrants
The top countries of origin for immigrants included Colombia, with 34,600 immigrants, followed by Morocco, which saw 25,500 people move to Spain. Spain itself had 25,200 returnees.
Other notable countries of origin include Venezuela, with 21,200 immigrants, and Peru, with 15,800. Argentina contributed 7,300 immigrants, while Ukraine had 7,000, likely influenced by ongoing geopolitical events. Honduras accounted for 5,600 immigrants, and Romania also had 5,700 people moving to Spain.
In terms of emigration abroad, meanwhile, some 10,100 Spaniards emigrated abroad during the quarter. The United Kingdom had 2,300 emigrants from Spain, while Romania saw 6,300 emigrants, Morocco had 7,600 emigrants, and Colombia had 6,600 emigrants. Peru recorded 2,600 emigrants, and Ukraine experienced 4,900 emigrants.
