Sweden reports lowest population growth in 22 years

Sweden has reported its lowest population increase in absolute terms since 2001, with the country’s population growing by 30,200 people last year.

According to Statistics Sweden (SCB), a decrease in the number of births, a lower number of immigrants and a higher rate of emigration have all played a part in reducing Sweden’s population growth rate.

Last year, some 100,100 children were born in Sweden, of which boys accounted for 51.2% and girls accounted for 48.8%.

The number of births decreased by 4,700, or 4.5% compared to the previous year, SCB noted. This was the lowest number of births since 2003.

As of the end of last year, Sweden’s population stood at 10,551,700.

Common occupations

Elsewhere, separate research from SCB has found that the most common occupation for Swedish women between the ages of 16 and 64 years, was in the field of ‘assistant nurses, home care and homes for the elderly’, with 113,910 women and 15,730 men employed in this field.

The most prevalent occupation among men was software- and system developers, where men comprised 80% of workers, while women accounted for the remaining 20%.

Among the 30 largest occupations, the distribution by sex was nearly equal in five professions. Specifically, ‘cooks and cold-buffet managers’ and ‘management and organisation analysts’ had the most balanced representation, with 49% women and 51% men in each occupation.

Other notable occupations for women include shop sales in specialty stores, preschool teachers, shop sales in groceries, cleaners and helpers in various establishments, home-based personal care workers, personal care providers, and office clerks in various capacities.
