Tourism in Austria hit an all-time high in 2024, with 154.29 million overnight stays recorded, as well as 46.71 million arrivals.

This means that 2024 surpassed the record levels of 2019, with overnight stays 1% higher than the pre-pandemic year. On a year-on-year basis, overnight stays were up 2.1%.

‘Most successful year’

“2024 was the most successful year to date in Austrian tourism,” commented Statistics Austria director general Tobias Thomas.

“The increase in overnight stays is primarily due to international guests. The increase in guests from the USA was particularly high in 2024. Germany remains by far the most important country of origin.”

International visitors

International guests accounted for 114.04 million stays (+2.5%), with Germany supplying 58.45 million overnight stays, followed by the Netherlands (11.09 million) and Switzerland/Liechtenstein (4.40 million). Also, visitors from the U.S. reached a record-breaking 2.38 million overnight stays.

Elsewhere, the number of overnight stays by Austrian residents also saw a slight increase, to 40.25 million (+0.9%).

In terms of the most popular destinations for tourists, more than half of the overnight stays were located in Tyrol and Salzburg (79.34 million combined).

Compared to 2019, Tyrol recorded a 1.6% increase, with Salzburg up 0.1%, however Vienna experienced the strongest growth, +7.2%.

City tourism reported a strong year, with Vienna recording 18.86 million overnight stays, a 9.3% increase on 2023. Elsewhere, Salzburg (3.14 million), Innsbruck (1.90 million), Graz (1.39 million), and Linz (1.02 million), also recorded new highs, according to the data. Read more here.
