Tourist arrivals in Hungary rose 8.3% in September

The number of tourist arrivals rose by 8.3% in Hungary in September, to 1.6 million, new data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) has revealed.

According to the data, these guests spent approximately 3.8 million nights at tourism accommodations during the period, an increase of 5.6% on the previous year.

In the nine-month period from January to September 2025, total guest numbers were 6.4% higher than in the same period the previous year, the data showed, at 15.1 million.

The number of domestic tourists rose by 2.2% in the January to September period, while international tourist arrivals rose by 11%.

Commercial accommodation establishments, such as hotels, accounted for 71% of all guests in September 2025, and recorded a 7.5% annual increase in arrivals. Private and other accommodation establishments saw a 10% rise.

Domestic tourism

Domestic tourism reported an increase in September, with 781,000 Hungarian tourists spending nearly 1.7 million nights at accommodation establishments during the month.

Domestic tourism rose most strongly in the Sopron region, close to the Austrian border, where numbers were up 17%, and rose in all other regions apart from Gyula, which was down 2.9%. Domestic tourism also rose by 16% in Budapest and by 2.1% around Lake Balaton.

International guests

The number of international guests stood at 861,000 for the month, with nights spent rising by 7.5% to 2.1 million.

Growth in international tourists was observed in all regions, most notably in Greater Budapest, where international arrivals rose by 19% in September, compared to the same month the previous year. Tourist accommodation numbers for international guests were 12% higher in Budapest, and 18% higher at Lake Balaton.

In total, there were 28,913 tourist accommodation establishments operating in Hungary in September, including 2,759 commercial and 26,154 private or other establishments. Of the commercial accommodations, 1,011 were hotels and 1,108 were boarding houses.

Combined, these tourist accommodation establishments reported revenue of HUF 103.7 billion in September, 6.2% higher than in the corresponding month a year earlier. Read more here.
