Travel searches for upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics ‘surging’, study finds

Flight searches to France for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, taking place from 23 July to 15 August, are surging, new data from travel technology provider Amadeus has found.

According to Amadeus, with less than six months to go until the start of the Games, flight searches are up 25% on the same period last year, with the top five countries searching for flights including the United States, Great Britain, Brazil, Spain and Canada.

Paris itself has seen a 33% increase in searches compared to the same period last year.

Olympic travel plans

German sports enthusiasts appear to be particularly keen in attending the Games – searches from German airports to Paris increased by 144% for travel dates between July 23 and August 15 in 2024, compared to the same dates last year.

Searches from various US cities to Paris for the same period are up 72%, with the UK (+60%) and Brazil (+50%) also seeing an increase.

The rest of Europe and the Americas are also showing increased interest in flights to Paris, with searches growing by 34% and 29%, respectively, in those regions.

Additionally, searches from the Asia Pacific region saw a 15% increase, and flights from MENA experienced a 10% bump. In the UAE, there has been a 60% increase in searches for travel to Paris for the duration of the Olympics.

At the same time, domestic travellers shouldn’t be overlooked – interest in flights to Paris from other parts of France has grown by 54%, the data showed.

The average duration of travel to France for the Olympic Games is seven days, however travellers from further afield are likely to stay longer, the data showed. Brazilian travellers are planning to stay for an average of nine days, while those from the Asia Pacific region are likely to stay for 12 days.

‘From a pronounced increase in global interest and a trend towards spontaneous decision-making to the expanding influence on cities beyond Paris, the data paints a lively picture of the evolving travel landscape,’ Amadeus said in a statement.

‘As sports enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the spectacle, travel marketers can harness these patterns to design flexible and targeted strategies, ensuring they navigate the evolving landscape and cater to the diverse preferences of travelers heading to France.’

Data in the report sourced from a custom search dataset, Amadeus Master Pricer, and Amadeus Agency Insights. Amadeus Air Search Travel Data comprises shopping transactions conducted by over 2,500 customers, including leading travel agencies worldwide.
