The number of unemployed individuals in Lithuania stood at 157,600 as of the start of October 2024, the country’s national statistics office (Stat.gov.lt) has noted, which is an increase of 5.9% (or 8,700) on the same month the previous year.
On a month-on-month basis, however, unemployment numbers were down 1.9%, or by 3,000.
The registered unemployment rate in Lithuania stood at 8.7% in September, which was up 0.4 percentage points compared to the same month a year earlier.
Unemployed men and women
By gender, the unemployment rate for women and men decreased by 0.2 percentage points to 8.9% and 8.4%, respectively. Compared to a year ago, the unemployment rate for men increased by 0.2 percentage points and for women by 0.4 percentage points.
As of October 1, 2024, there were 80,100 unemployed women and 77,500 unemployed men in Lithuania.
Youth unemployment
In terms of youth unemployment, as of October 1, 2024, there were 17,700 unemployed youth (aged 16-24). Compared to a year ago, the number of unemployed youth has increased by 1,200 (or 7.1%).
Youth aged 16-24 made up slightly more than a tenth (11.2%) of all registered unemployed as of the start of October. Half of the unemployed youth (50.5%) were women.
The registered unemployment rate for youth remained unchanged in September at 7.2%. A year ago, it was 0.4 percentage points lower at 6.8%.
Elsewhere, the unemployment rate for those aged 50 and older decreased by 0.1 percentage points in September, reaching 10% at the end of the month. This is 1.3 percentage points higher than the national average.
Compared to a year ago, the unemployment rate for this age group has increased by 0.4 percentage points (it was 9.6%). As of the start of October, there were 59,900 unemployed people aged 50 and older, representing 38% of all registered unemployed.
Ukrainian refugees
With regard to Ukrainian refugees living in Lithuania, there were 2,400 unemployed Ukrainians registered with the country’s jobs service as of the start of October, which is 7% or 182 fewer than the previous month. Ukrainians make up 1.6% of all registered unemployed.
Among the unemployed Ukrainians, the majority (84.6%) are women. Young people (aged up to 24) make up 13.7%, while those aged 25-49 make up 65.3%, and those older than 50 make up 21%. Some 34,700 Ukrainians are currently employed in Lithuania, which is a 2.6% increase month-on-month. The full data set can be found here.
