Certain countries were responsible for a sizeable percentage of particular fruit and vegetable production, Eurostat said – Italy, for example, accounted for 40% of the EU’s harvested tomatoes in 2022, while the Netherlands was the bloc’s top onion producer, accounting for nearly a quarter (24%) of total output. Germany was the biggest producer of carrots, accounting for 18% of the total.

Italy, Poland, Spain, and France were the primary producers of fruit, berries, and nuts (excluding citrus fruit, grapes, and strawberries) within the EU in 2022, with Poland dominating the apple market with a share of 34%, followed by Italy at 18%, and France at 14%.

Similarly, for pears, Italy led production with a share of 25%, followed closely by the Netherlands and Belgium, both at 17%.
