Germany reported the highest electricity prices in the European Union in the second half of 2024, paying €39.43 per 100 kWh, followed by Denmark (€37.63) and Ireland (€36.99), according to new data.
Other countries to report high electricity rates during the period included Belgium (€33.13), Czechia (€33.02) and Cyprus (€32.51).
The lowest electricity prices for the period were reported in Hungary, which paid €10.32 per 100 kWh, followed by Bulgaria (€12.17) and Malta (€13.01), according to the Eurostat data.
Household electricity prices
Average household electricity prices remained relatively stable in the EU in the second half of last year, at €28.72 per 100 kWh, compared to €28.89 per 100 kWh in the first half.
This price level is, however, still considerably higher than before the 2022 energy crisis, which was driven by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Taxes on electricity bills increased slightly from 24.3% to 25.1%, while network costs rose in 18 EU countries, contributing to an overall 8.9% increase in network costs.
The biggest year-on-year increases in electricity prices were recorded in Portugal, which saw prices up 14.2% compared to the second half of 2023, followed by Finland (+13.6%), and France (+12.9%), while Latvia, the Netherlands, and Belgium experienced substantial reductions.
If expressed in purchasing power standard (PPS), prices were highest in Czechia (41.00), Cyprus (35.70) and Germany (35.23), while the lowest PPS prices were observed in Malta (14.33), Luxembourg (15.39) and Hungary (15.45). Read more here.
