In the second half of 2024, household gas prices in the EU rose for the first time since the 2022 energy crisis, reaching an average of €12.33 per 100 kWh. This marked an increase from €11.04 in the first half of the year and was the highest price recorded since data collection began in 2008.
The increase was primarily driven by higher taxes in many EU countries, as previous relief measures were scaled back.
On a year-on-year basis, a total of six countries experienced price increases for household gas, while 14 EU member states reported a decrease in prices, largely due to reduced energy and supply costs.
Non-household customers
For non-household customers, meanwhile, the downward trend in gas prices halted in the second half of last year, with prices rising marginally.
Non-household gas prices excluding VAT increased to €6.24 per 100 kWh, up from €6.16 in the first half, while if all taxes are included, prices rose to €5.41 from €5.30. On a year-on-year basis, just two EU member states saw price increases for non-household consumers, while 21 saw price decreases, largely driven by lower energy and supply costs. Read more here.
