What EU country produced the most fruit and vegetables last year?

The European Union harvested some 62.2 million tonnes of fresh vegetables in 2024, a 6% increase on the previous year (58.8 million tonnes), new data from Eurostat has found.

Spain, with 14.8 million tonnes, was the largest producer of fresh vegetables in the EU last year, while Italy produced 13.9 million tonnes and France 5.8 million tonnes – between them these three countries account for 55% of the EU’s total vegetable production.

In terms of fruit, meanwhile, the EU harvested 24.3 million tonnes of fruit, berries and nuts last year (excluding citrus fruits, grapes and strawberries), which was 2% lower than the previous year.

Italy, Spain and Poland were the main producers of fruit, berries and nuts in the EU, together accounting for 57% of the total. Italy led the way with 5.4 million tonnes, Spain produced 4.3 million tonnes and Poland 4.1 million tonnes.

Fruit and vegetables

Looking at the performance of specific fruit and vegetable crops in the EU, the tomato harvest increased by 5% to 16.8 million tonnes, with Italy the EU’s leading tomato producer, supplying 36% of the total, followed by Spain (27%) and Portugal (10%).

Carrot production rose by 6% to 4.7 million tonnes, with Germany, France and Poland the top producers, contributing 18%, 14% and 12% respectively.

Onion production rose 11% across the EU last year, to 7.0 million tonnes, with the Netherlands (26% of the total) leading the way, ahead of Spain (20%) and Germany (12%).

Apple production totalled 11.6 million tonnes last year, a 4% decrease from 2023, with Poland leading the way in terms of production (29%), followed by Italy (21%) and France (17%).

Some 1.9 million tonnes of pears were produced in the EU last year, led by Italy (24%), the Netherlands (17%) and Belgium (15%).

Finally, peach production in the EU rose by 2% compared with the previous year, with Spain producing 37% of the EU’s total, Italy 33% and Greece 21%. Together, these three countries accounted for 91% of all peaches harvested in the bloc. Read more here.
