What EU country reported the biggest decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in Q3 2024?

Austria reported a 7.8% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in Q3 2024, compared to the same period a year earlier, the sharpest decline out of all EU member states.

Other countries to report a notable decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, year-on-year, include Hungary, which saw emissions fall by 3.3%, Denmark, which was down 2.8%, Czechia (-2.6%), Belgium (-2.5%) and Portugal (-2.0%), the Eurostat data showed.

A number of countries saw their greenhouse gas emissions increase in the period, with Lithuania seeing the largest year-on-year increase (+7.8%), followed by Luxembourg (+6.6%), Sweden (+6.0%) and Greece (+2.8%).

Greenhouse gas emissions in EU

Overall, greenhouse gas emissions across the European Union totalled 767 million tonnes of CO2-equivalents (CO2-eq) in Q3 2024, which is a 0.6% decrease on the corresponding period a year earlier, when 772 million tonnes of CO2-eq were generated.

Some 16 countries reported a decline in greenhouse gas emissions in the period, of which 12 saw an increase in GDP while also reducing emissions. Read more here.
