Luxembourg reported a 11.4% annual increase in retail trade volumes in January 2025, the highest in the European Union, new data from Eurostat has revealed.
According to the data, other countries to report an above-average increase in retail trade volumes for the month included Bulgaria (+8.1%), Portugal (+5.3%), Hungary (+4.6%), Croatia (+4.4%), Sweden (+4.1%) and Malta (+3.8%).
At the other end of the scale, an annual decrease in retail trade volumes was reported in Finland (-0.4%), Italy (-0.3%) and Belgium (-0.3%).
Retail trade in the EU
Overall, across the European Union the calendar adjusted retail sales index increased by 1.6% in January on an annual basis, while in the euro area it was up by 1.5%.
Sectors to see an increase in the volume of retail trade on an annual basis (across the EU) included food, drinks and tobacco (+1.0%), non-food products (except automotive fuel) (+2.4%) and automotive fuel in specialised stores (+0.1%), according to Eurostat.
