Spain reported the highest seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the European Union in November 2024, of 11.2%, new data from Eurostat has revealed.
Other countries to report an above-average unemployment rate for the month included Greece (9.6%), Finland (8.9%), Sweden (8.3%) and France (7.7%).
At the other end of the spectrum, unemployment levels were lowest in Czechia, at 2.0%, while Poland (3.0%), Malta (3.0%), Germany (3.4%) and the Netherlands (3.7%) also displayed low levels of unemployment.
Unemployment rate in EU
The seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the European Union stood at 5.9% in November, on a par with the previous month, and down from 6.1% in November 2023. In the euro area specifically, meanwhile, the unemployment rate was 6.3%, again level with the previous month and down from 6.5% a year earlier.
According to Eurostat, some 12.968 million people in the European Union, of which 10.819 million reside in the euro area, were unemployed in November 2024. This equates to a month-on-month decrease of 16,000 in the EU and 39,000 in the euro area.
On a yearly basis, unemployment declined by 295,000 in the EU and 333,000 in the euro area.
Youth unemployment in the EU increased marginally to 15.3% in November 2024, up from 15.2% in October 2024, with some 3.013 million young individuals unemployed across the EU. In terms of gender, meanwhile, unemployment rates were 6.1% for women and 5.7% for men.
