What EU country reported the most nights spent in tourist accommodation in December 2024?

Germany reported the most nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments in the EU in December 2024, with a total of 27 million nights spent, Eurostat data has found.

Other countries to report a significant number of tourism nights spent in December include Spain (24.9 million nights), France (21.2 million nights), Italy (19.5 million nights) and Austria (10.8 million nights).

At the other end of the scale, just 183,596 nights were spent in Luxembourg in December, along with 330,365 nights in Latvia and 397,559 nights in Cyprus.

Tourism in 2024

On a full-year basis, 2024 was the best tourism year to date in the EU, with the total number of nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments exceeding 3 billion, Eurostat said.

This is a 2.2% increase on the previous year, or an additional 65.4 million nights overall.

Spain (500 million), Italy (458 million), France (451 million) and Germany (441 million) registered the highest number of nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments during 2024, accounting for 61.6% of the total nights spent in the EU.

At the other end of the scale, Luxembourg (3.4 million), Latvia (4.7 million) and Estonia (6.6 million) registered the lowest number of nights during 2024.

On an annual basis, the rise in tourism was highest in Malta (+14.4%) and Latvia (+7.4%), while a handful of countries saw year-on-year declines, including Luxembourg, France, Belgium, and Sweden. Read more here.
