Slovakia and Czechia reported the highest growth in terms of nights spent by international visitors in tourist accommodation in 2023, recording a 29% increase compared to the previous year.
Other EU countries to see a marked increase include the Netherlands and Romania, which both saw the number of nights from international guests rise by 23%.
At the other end of the scale, Luxembourg saw no growth (0%), while Croatia reported a modest increase of 2% in terms of the number of nights spent by international visitors.
In terms of tourist nights spent by domestic visitors, meanwhile, Greece experienced the highest increase in the number of nights spent, with a rise of 13% in 2023 compared to 2022. This was followed by Slovakia with an 11% increase and Bulgaria with a 9% increase.

Overall nights spent
If both international and domestic guests are considered, Malta and Cyprus reported the highest number of nights spent by guests in tourist accommodation, with both reporting a 20% increase.
Slovakia, with an increase of 16%, followed closely behind, while a small decrease in the number of nights was recorded in Luxembourg (-1%).
Last year, the number of nights spent in tourist accommodation across the European Union reached 2.9 billion, marking a 6.1% increase compared to 2022 and a 1.4% increase compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019.
According to Eurostat, the broader data indicates a ‘rebound’ in tourism nights from spring 2022 onwards, with the number of nights spent approaching pre-pandemic levels from May 2022, as travel numbers increased.
