Some 70.9% of EU citizens used internet-connected or ‘smart’ devices last year, new data from Eurostat has found, with the highest share of users in the Netherlands (94.8%).
Other countries in which smart devices saw widespread use include Ireland (90.6%), Denmark (87.0%), Sweden (86.0%) and Spain (84.5%).
At the other end of the scale, the lowest share of smart device use was seen in Poland (46.1%), Bulgaria (50.8%) and Romania (56.6%).
Types of smart devices
Internet-connected TVs were the most commonly used smart devices in 2024, reported by 57.9% of EU citizens, followed by wearable devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers (29.9%).
Elsewhere, 19.5% of citizens use internet-connected games consoles, 19.3% use smart home audio systems, and 16% report using a ‘virtual assistant’ in the form of a smart speaker.
Other smart devices in use around the home include energy management systems (14.2%), smart home appliances (12.8%), home security devices (11.8%) and cars with a built-in wireless connection (10.5%). Read more here.
