Estonia reported the highest annual inflation rate in the euro area in May 2025, at 4.6%, according to flash estimates from Eurostat.
Other countries to report an above-average annual inflation rate for the month include Slovakia (4.3%), Croatia (4.3%) and Latvia (3.7%).
At the other end of the scale, the lowest annual inflation rate in the euro area was reported in Cyprus (0.4%) and France (0.6%), according to the flash estimates. Germany is on 2.1%, with Spain and Italy both on 1.9%.
On a month-on-month basis, the biggest increase in inflation was observed in Malta (1.6%), followed by Portugal (0.7%) and Croatia (0.6%).
Annual inflation in euro area
Annual inflation in the euro area stood at 1.9% in May, down from 2.2% in April, Eurostat’s data found.
Among the main components of inflation, food, alcohol, and tobacco contributed the most in May, at 3.3%, up from 3.0% in April, according to the estimates.
The services sector contributed 3.2% to inflation, down from 4.0% the previous month, while non-energy industrial goods remain unchanged at 0.6%. Energy prices fell by 3.6%, according to the estimates – a continuation of the trend in that category.
The flash estimate is based on partial data available at the end of May. Eurostat will publish the full set of harmonised inflation figures for May 2025 on 18 June. Read more here.
