Luxembourg reported the biggest increase in retail trade volumes in the European Union in November 2024, reporting a 15.3% increase for the month.
November is always a busy time for retailers, with Black Friday taking place towards the end of the period, and several other countries reported a notable increase in retail trade volumes in the period, including Romania (+8.6%), Lithuania (+7.2%), Bulgaria (+6.8%) and Croatia (+6.2%).
Several countries also reported a decline in the period, including Belgium (-5.4%), Finland (-2.7%), Italy (-1.0%), Estonia (-0.2%) and Slovenia (-0.1%), the data showed.
For several EU countries, the data is provisional, while no data was available for Czechia, Ireland and Greece.
Retail trade in the EU
Overall, compared to November 2023, retail trade volumes were 1.5% higher in the EU, and 1.2% higher in the euro zone, according to Eurostat.
Within the EU, the volume of retail trade increased for food, drinks, tobacco by 0.2%, decreased for non-food products (except automotive fuel) by 0.4%, and increased for automotive fuel in specialised stores by 0.8%.
On a month-on-month basis, retail trade volumes were 0.2% higher in the EU and 0.1% higher in the euro area. Read more here.
