Luxembourg reported the highest annual increase in retail trade volumes in the European Union in February 2025, with a 10.3% increase, ahead of Cyprus (+8.5%) and Estonia (+5.2%).
Portugal (+5.0%), Germany (+4.8%) and Slovenia (+4.2%) were among the other EU countries to report a notable increase in retail trade volumes for the month, Eurostat‘s data showed.
At the other end of the scale, the largest decreases were reported in Bulgaria (-1.7%), the Netherlands (-1.4%) and Poland (-1.2%), with Italy (-1.1%), Finland (-0.8%) and Latvia (-0.8%) also seeing declines.
Retail sales index in EU
Overall, the calendar adjusted retail sales index increased by 2.0% in the EU in February, and by 2.3% in the euro area.
On an annual basis, the volume of retail trade in the EU increased for food, drinks and tobacco by 1.4%; for non-food products (except automotive fuel) by 2.5%; and for automotive fuel in specialised stores by 1.2%.
In the euro area specifically, meanwhile, the volume of retail trade was up 1.9% for food, drinks and tobacco, by 2.5% for non-food products, and by 0.7% for automotive fuel in specialised stores.
