What is the best European city for foodies?

London has been named the best European city for foodies, boasting more 5-star reviews for its restaurants, cafés and bars than any other, a new study by Dutch lifestyle magazine Dailybase has found.

London boasts a total of 2,906 5-star reviews for its eating and drinking establishments, putting it ahead of Paris, which boasts a total of 2,898 5-star reviews, and Barcelona, which ranks third with a total of 1,475 5-star reviews.

In determining its findings, Dailybase analysed Tripadvisor data to reveal the quantity of 5-star reviews for dining establishments across European cities. This process led to the creation of a ranking comprising 193 European cities for which Tripadvisor data was accessible.

Other European cities to rank in the top ten include Rome, in fourth place with 1,407 5-star reviews, followed closely by Athens with 1,403 and Madrid with 1,395. Lisbon follows in seventh place with 1,177 reviews, while Berlin takes eighth place with 1,074. Prague secures ninth position with 1,015 reviews, and Milan closes the top ten with 814 5-star reviews.

Outside the top ten, cities to feature include Budapest, Manchester, Naples, Vienna, Valencia, Porto, Amsterdam, Malaga, Warsaw and Palma de Mallorca.

Food inspiration

Commenting on the findings, Daniël de Voer, the chief editor of Dailybase, said, “Discovering the best cities in Europe for foodies, whether this be fine dining experiences, local cafés, or quirky bars, is not only fascinating but could inspire your next travel destination.

“Using Tripadvisor review data reflects authentic experiences from both tourists and the locals of each city. This analysis can offer a helpful guide to the cuisine of each place, as well as a foodie’s favorite and most recommended spots.”
