Ranking Europe’s top SEO work destinations – what country ranks highest?

The UK has been named the best country in Europe to work in search engine optimisation (SEO), a study by Ahrefs has found.

Ahrefs, an SEO-optimisation platform, analysed 17 European countries based on six factors related to a career in SEO, including average annual salary, the number of jobs and businesses per 100,000 people, and the average company rating. These were then indexed out of 100 to determine the best locations in which to pursue a career in SEO.

UK leads the way

The UK came out on top with a score of 79.43 out of 100, with the country boasting the joint-highest number of SEO companies on the continent, with 5,033.

The average salary for SEO professionals in the UK was €49,647 (£42,582) per annum, the sixth highest in Europe, while directors earn a median annual wage of €62,916 (£53,963).

In second place is the Netherlands, with a score of 72.51, with the country boasting more SEO-related jobs than any other in the study – 0.91 per 100,000 residents.

Ireland ranks third, with a score of 69.14, boosted by the number of companies (310) and high employer ratings, while Denmark (61.31) places fourth and Germany (61.16) comes in fifth.

‘Rising in popularity’

“With SEO writers, analysts, marketers, and more becoming increasingly sought after by businesses across Europe, it is no surprise specialist SEO companies are rising in popularity,” commented Tim Soulo, CMO at Ahrefs.

“As businesses look to leverage SEO to enhance in-house digital marketing strategies by generating more website traffic and improving search rankings, more and more firms are seeking industry professionals to achieve these goals.

“The industry also ranks extremely highly for employee satisfaction, with an average rating of no lower than 4.5 out of five found across Europe in the study.”
