According to new data from Eurostat, Paris-Charles de Gaulle ranked second, with 463,000 flights during 2024, while Frankfurt/Main in Germany was third, with 437,000 flights.

Madrid/Barajas placed fourth, followed by Barcelona/El Prat, while Munich, Rome/Fiumincino, Athens/Eleftherios Venizelos, Vienna/Schwechat and Dublin round off the top ten.

Among the top 10 airports with the most commercial flights, Athens had the highest share of non-scheduled flights at 5.5%, followed by Vienna (4.6%), and Madrid (4.5%).

Overall, the European Union recorded 6.7 million commercial flights in 2024, marking a 5.8% increase compared to 2023 (6.3 million), according to Eurostat.

However, airline travel is still below pre-pandemic levels, with some seven million flights recorded in 2019.

Non-scheduled commercial flights, which include charter and special flights, accounted for 8.7% of all flights in 2024, with the highest percentages observed during the summer months – June, July, and August – at 10.3%, 10.7%, and 10.1%, respectively. Read more here.
