What is the busiest airport in the European Union?

Schiphol airport in Amsterdam was the busiest airport in the European Union in 2024, recording some 484,000 flights over the course of the year.

According to new data from Eurostat, Paris-Charles de Gaulle ranked second, with 463,000 flights during 2024, while Frankfurt/Main in Germany was third, with 437,000 flights.

Madrid/Barajas placed fourth, followed by Barcelona/El Prat, while Munich, Rome/Fiumincino, Athens/Eleftherios Venizelos, Vienna/Schwechat and Dublin round off the top ten.

Among the top 10 airports with the most commercial flights, Athens had the highest share of non-scheduled flights at 5.5%, followed by Vienna (4.6%), and Madrid (4.5%).

In 2024, 6.7 million commercial flights were recorded in the EU. ✈️

Total flights in the EU

Overall, the European Union recorded 6.7 million commercial flights in 2024, marking a 5.8% increase compared to 2023 (6.3 million), according to Eurostat.

However, airline travel is still below pre-pandemic levels, with some seven million flights recorded in 2019.

Non-scheduled commercial flights, which include charter and special flights, accounted for 8.7% of all flights in 2024, with the highest percentages observed during the summer months – June, July, and August – at 10.3%, 10.7%, and 10.1%, respectively. Read more here.
