Which EU country reported the biggest increase in house sales last year?

Luxembourg reported a 47.1% increase in house sales in 2024, the highest in the European Union, new data from Eurostat has revealed.

This compares to a 43.3% drop in house sales in Luxembourg the previous year.

Eurostat measured house sales in 17 EU countries for which data is available, and found that 13 countries reported year-on-year increases.

Other countries to see a notable increase last year included Hungary, which saw house sales rise 34.7% (following a 31.4% decline the previous year), the Netherlands, which was up 16.7% and Portugal, which rose 15.2%.

At the same time, the biggest decreases in house sales were reported in Slovenia (-17.7%), France (-9.1%) and Ireland (-2.8%).

The previous year, in 2023, 13 out of 16 reporting countries registered decreases in house sales, with Cyprus (+31%), Poland (+6.7%) and Ireland (+0.6%) the only countries to buck the trend and see house sales increase. Read more here.

House prices increase in Q1

Elsewhere, separate Eurostat data showed that house prices rose by 5.7% in the EU, year-on-year, in the first quarter of 2025. In the euro area, house prices were 5.4% higher, year-on-year.

These increases mark an acceleration from Q4 2024 (+4.9% EU, +4.1% euro area), the data showed. The biggest increase in first-quarter house prices was seen in Portugal (+16.3%), followed by Bulgaria (+15.1%) and Croatia (+13.1%). Read more here.
