Wholesale selling prices in Germany 0.7% higher in August

Wholesale selling prices saw an increase of 0.7% in Germany in August 2025, compared to the corresponding month a year ago, new data from the federal statistics office (Destatis) has found.

The year-on-year increase was more pronounced than in July (+0.5%) and slightly lower than that of June (+0.9%). On a month-to-month basis, wholesale prices declined by 0.6% compared with July 2025, the data showed.

Food, beverages and tobacco

An increase in the price of food, beverages, and tobacco was the main driver of wholesale price increases for the month, with this category seeing prices rise 4.2% compared with the same month last year.

On a month-on-month basis, however, food, beverages, and tobacco prices were 0.2% lower.

Within this segment, coffee, tea, cocoa, and spices recorded the strongest increase, up 17.7% year-on-year, while sugar, confectionery, and baked goods rose by 14.5%. Other categories to see notable increases included meat and meat products (+9.6%), live animals (+8.9%), and milk, dairy products, eggs, edible oils, and dietary fats (+7.4%).

Other segments to report a significant increase in wholesale selling prices included non-ferrous ores, metals, and semi-finished products, which rose 21.1% compared to the corresponding month a year earlier, and 1.6% compared with the previous month.

Wholesale price decreases

Going the other way, meanwhile, were wholesale prices in solid fuels and petroleum products, which were down 6.9% on a year-on-year basis, while relative to July 2025 they fell 4.2%.

Scrap and residues also saw prices decline, falling 10.4% compared with August of last year, and 3.3% compared with the previous month. Other declines included data processing and peripheral equipment (-4.9% year-on-year) and iron, steel, and semi-finished steel products (-4.6%).

According to Destatis, the wholesale price index stood at 116.9 points in August 2025 (2021 = 100). This compares with 117.6 points in July 2025 and 117.7 points in June 2025. Read more here.
