Wine consumption fell in Austria last year

Austrians consumed an average of 26.0 litres of wine per capita during the 2023/24 marketing year, a decrease of 0.7 litres compared to the previous year, according to new data from Statistics Austria.

Domestic wine production fell by 8% to 2.3 million hectolitres, while Austria imported 836,000 hectolitres, a 3% increase.

Vegetable consumption rises

The Statistics Austria data, which covers production and consumption of agricultural crops important to the Austrian economy, also shows that vegetable consumption rose to 122.5 kg per person, 2.0 kg more than the year before.

The domestic vegetable harvest fell by 3% in 2023/24, with imports rising by 22%, to 1.1 million tonnes.

Elsewhere, 828,000 tonnes of fruit (a 12% increase), 705,000 tonnes of oilseeds (+22%), 287,000 tonnes of vegetable oils (+6%) and 293,000 tonnes of potatoes (+15%) were imported.

According to Statistics Austria, domestic agriculture covered 95% of the country’s wine demand, compared to 90% for cereals, 78% for potatoes, 55% for vegetables, 50% for oilseeds and 33% each for fruit and vegetable oils.

International trade

‘The volume of agricultural international trade for crop and animal products increased from €33.8 billion in the previous year to €34.4 billion (+2%) in the 2023/2024 marketing year,’ Statistics Austria said in a statement. ‘This corresponds to a share of 8.9% of the total foreign trade volume (€385.8 billion).

‘The value of agricultural imports rose from €17.0 billion to €17.9 billion (+5%) and that of exports decreased from €16.8 billion to €16.5 billion (−2%) – amounting to a deficit of €1.4 billion in agricultural foreign trade in total.’ Read more here.
