What country generated the highest percentage of energy from renewables in 2022?

Sweden generated the highest percentage of energy from renewable resources in the EU in 2022, with just over 66% of the country’s energy derived from hydro, wind, solid and liquid biofuels, as well as heat pumps.

According to Eurostat data, Finland generated 47.89% of its energy from renewable sources in 2022, largely from hydro, wind and biofuels, ahead of Latvia, which generated 43.3% of its energy from renewable sources.

In terms of the broader economic area, meanwhile, Norway led the way in terms of energy sourced from renewables, with 75.8% of the country’s energy coming from this channel.

At the other end of the spectrum, Ireland generated just 13.1% of its energy from renewable resources, with Malta (13.4%), Belgium (13.76%) and Luxembourg (14.36%) also boasting a low percentage.

At EU level, the share of energy sourced from renewable sources stood at 23.0% in. 2022, an increase of 1.1 percentage points from the previous year, the data showed.

The EU’s updated Renewable Energy Directive has increased the EU’s 2030 renewable energy target from 32% to 42.5%, with a goal to potentially raise it further to 45%. Consequently, EU member states must enhance their collective efforts to meet the revised 2030 target for renewable energy.
