The population of Finland stood at 5,652,881 as of the end of 2025, an increase of 16,910 people year-on-year, according to new data from Statistics Finland.
This increase represents a slowdown compared with previous years, as population growth in 2025 was roughly half of the growth seen in 2024. In 2023 and 2024, Finland experienced stronger population growth, largely due to the arrival of Ukrainian immigrants as a result of the ongoing conflict in the country.
Population trends
The population trends in 2025 were not uniform across the country, the data showed. Out of Finland’s municipalities, 77 experienced a population increase, while 227 saw a decline.
The region of Uusimaa, which includes the capital city Helsinki, continues to be a hub for foreign-born residents, with one in five people living in the region having a foreign background.
Another notable demographic change last year was the growth in the number of second-generation individuals with foreign backgrounds. For the first time, this population exceeded 100,000, reflecting a growing cohort of residents who are Finnish-born but have at least one parent of foreign origin.
Religious affiliation is also evolving. In 2025, the number of people with no religious affiliation surpassed two million, reflecting broader societal trends toward secularisation, the data showed. Read more here.
