Annual inflation eased somewhat in both the euro area and the European Union in June 2026, according to the latest data from Eurostat.
In the euro area, annual inflation in the euro area fell to 2.8% in June, down from 3.2% in May, while across the European Union, annual inflation also eased, declining from 3.3% to 2.9%.
While inflationary pressures moderated across most Member States during the month, prices remain above the European Central Bank’s 2% medium-term target. A year earlier, annual inflation stood at 2.0% in the euro area and 2.3% across the EU, Eurostat noted.
Country by country
Inflation declined in 22 EU Member States compared with May, remained unchanged in three and increased in two.
Sweden recorded the lowest annual inflation rate at 1.0%, followed by Czechia at 1.1% and Denmark at 1.8%. Romania continued to record the highest inflation in the bloc at 9.2%, ahead of Lithuania (5.4%) and Bulgaria (5.2%).
Services sector
Although inflation eased overall, services remained the largest contributor to price growth in the euro area, adding 1.51 percentage points to the annual inflation rate, according to Eurostat.
Energy was the second-largest contributor, accounting for 0.77 percentage points, followed by food, alcohol and tobacco (0.29 percentage points) and non-energy industrial goods (0.18 percentage points).
Energy inflation slowed compared with May but remained elevated at 8.5% year on year, reflecting continued upward pressure on energy prices despite a monthly decline. Services inflation also eased, from 3.5% in May to 3.2% in June.
Food price inflation continued to moderate. Annual inflation for food, alcohol and tobacco fell to 1.5%, down from 1.9% in May, while processed food inflation slowed to 0.9%. Inflation for unprocessed food also declined, to 3.1%.
On a monthly basis, consumer prices in both the euro area and the EU declined by 0.1% in June.
