Austria has recorded a 13.4% increase in new passenger car registrations in the year to date, largely driven by electric and hybrid vehicles, Statistics Austria has said.
“The car market in Austria continued to grow in July 2026,” commented Manuela Lenk, director general, statistics at Statistics Austria. “Compared with July 2025, new passenger car registrations rose by 3.8% to 25,823. This brings the total number of new cars put on the road since the start of the year to 190,352, 13.4% more than in the first seven months of the previous year.
“Electric cars and petrol-hybrids in particular saw strong growth, each up by 30%, while fewer new combustion-engine vehicles were registered than a year earlier.”
Between June and July, a total of 22,434 additional cars were registered, compared with the same period a year ago. Overall motor vehicle registrations rose by 13.1% to 260,612.
Alternative powertrains
Alternative powertrains accounted for 125,631 passenger car registrations during the period, representing 66% of the total and an increase of 25.7% year on year. Petrol-electric hybrids recorded 70,567 registrations, up 29.8%, while all-electric vehicles increased by 29.3% to 47,133.
By contrast, conventional petrol and diesel car registrations continued to decline. Petrol registrations fell by 2.4% to 46,134, while diesel registrations decreased by 10.4% to 18,587. Combined, petrol and diesel cars accounted for 34% of new registrations, down 4.8% from the previous year. Diesel hybrids also declined, falling 12.9% to 7,929 registrations.
Leading car brands
Volkswagen was Austria’s leading passenger car brand during the first seven months of this year, with a 13.5% market share, followed by Skoda at 10.9%, Audi at 6.5% and BMW at 6.4%. Among the leading brands, BYD recorded the largest increase, with registrations up 77.9%, while Seat, Mercedes, Skoda, Audi and Volkswagen also recorded growth.
Elsewhere, BMW, Dacia, Cupra and Toyota registered fewer vehicles than in the same period of 2025.
BMW held the largest share of Austria’s electric passenger car market at 10.5%, followed by Skoda at 10.2%, BYD at 9.7%, Tesla at 9.1% and Volkswagen at 8.5%. Read more here.
