Energy use across the European Union declined in 2022

The net domestic energy use across the European Union in 2022 was 4.2% lower than the previous year, according to new data from Eurostat.

The net domestic energy use across the European Union in 2022 was 4.2% lower than the previous year, according to new data from Eurostat.

Net domestic energy use stood at 58.8 million terajoules across the bloc in 2022, with this figure including both household energy use as well as energy used by businesses and government functions, such as public services.

Businesses and government functions accounted for 72.9% of the energy use in 2022, while households accounted for 27.1%, the data showed.

Manufacturing leads the way

Manufacturing was responsible for the greatest share of net domestic energy use (15.3 million terajoules; 26.0% of the total) in the European Union in 2022, followed by electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (11.2 million terajoules; 19.0%) and transport and storage (6.9 terajoules; 11.8%).

On a year-on-year basis, i.e. compared to 2021, manufacturing reported the biggest decline in energy use (-8.5%), followed by electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (-5.2%).

Most sectors reported a decline in energy use in 2022, compared to 2021, with transportation and storage (+8.1%) an outlier. Read more here.
