Households’ financial position improved in Finland last year

Households in Finland saw their indebtedness ratio decline and their financial assets grow last year, new data from Statistics Finland has shown.

According to the data, as of the end of the year, Finnish households held financial assets worth €410.6 billion, an increase of €21.5 billion on the previous year.

At the same time, households’ liabilities decreased by €1.2 billion, to €204.6 billion.

The household indebtedness ratio, which measures liabilities in relation to disposable income, stood at 122.7% as of the end of last year, which represents a 4.1-percentage-point decline compared to the previous year.

The reduction in liabilities alongside the growth in financial assets indicates that households’ net financia position has strengthened.

Average earnings

Elsewhere, separate data from Statistics Finland indicated that the earnings level index, which measures the growth in nominal earnings of full-time employees, rose by 2.8% between July and September 2025 compared to the corresponding period the previous year.

Real earnings increased by 2.4% during the same period as wage growth outpaced the increase in consumer prices.

Earnings saw the most significant growth in the welfare regional administration sector, with nominal earnings rising by 3.9% year-on-year in the third quarter.

In contrast, earnings in the local government sector (excluding welfare regional administration) saw the slowest increase, growing by 1.3%. ‘The differences in earnings development in different sectors were largely due to the different timing of contract increases,’ Statistics Finland noted.

The data also showed that average monthly earnings for full-time employees during regular working hours stood at €4,180 in the July to September quarter, with central government employees earning the highest average monthly pay, at €4,590, while employees in non-profit organisations serving households earned the lowest, at €3,630.
