Pet owners in Hungary are increasing their spend on treats, toys and other accessories, a new study by online supermarket Kifli.hu has revealed.
Kifli sold 551,000 pet products during the first nine months of 2026, up 47% from 376,000 in the same period of 2025. Gross turnover from pet products increased by 42%.
Regular shopping
“The growth is not primarily due to individual owners spending more on their pets, but rather to the fact that more and more people are choosing Kifli for regular pet shopping,” commented Dániel Szabó, CEO of Kifli.hu.
“It is interesting to note that more and more of our customers purchase their entire monthly supply from us, from large-packaged food to litter. Pet-related shopping is increasingly becoming a part of everyday, pre-planned household purchases, similar to groceries or household goods.”
Popular products
Pet food, litter and hygiene products accounted for around 85% of the pet products sold through the platform. However, sales of treats and toys are accelerating – around 76,000 pet treats and toys were sold by October, 33% more than in the comparable period a year earlier.
Cat treats recorded the strongest increase, with purchases rising 59%, while sales of dog treats increased by 26%.
Other products proving popular among customers included Advent calendars, Halloween-themed cat toys, seasonal plush toys and cat beds designed to hang on radiators.
Cat equipment sales increased by 56%, the retailer reported. In the litter category, Kifli reported demand for products containing added-value ingredients such as green tea, coconut and jasmine.
Elsewhere, salmon oil has also become a popular product for dogs, with the product marketed for its omega-3 fatty acid content and potential benefits for skin, coat and joint function.
The figures were released to coincide with World Animal Day on 4 October, with the retailer noting an increase in sales around the occasion. In 2025, it received 41% more pet-related orders on World Animal Day than on an average day during the second half of September. Read more here.
