Luxembourg reported a 8.3% increase in retail trade volumes in June 2026, the highest in the European Union, according to new estimates from Eurostat.
Other countries to report a notable increase in retail trade volumes included Sweden (+7.2%) and Bulgaria (+7.1%), while decreases were recorded in Romania (-6.6%), Austria (-0.3%), Belgium (-0.1%) and Germany (-0.1%).
Retail sales volumes fell across both the euro area and the European Union in June, as declines in food and non-food purchases offset higher spending on automotive fuel, Eurostat noted.
Compared with June 2025, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade increased by 0.7% in the euro area and by 1.2% across the EU.
Annual growth in the euro area was driven by a 1.7% increase in non-food retail sales and a 0.9% rise in food, drinks and tobacco. Automotive fuel sales, however, declined by 6.6% compared with the same month last year.
Across the EU, non-food retail sales increased by 2.3% year on year, while food, drinks and tobacco sales rose by 0.7%. Automotive fuel sales were down 4.1%.
Month-on-month
On a month-on-month basis, meanwhile, i.e. compared with May 2026, retail sales decreased by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.1% across the EU. The figures follow monthly growth of 0.4% in the euro area and 0.6% in the EU in May.
Within the euro area, sales of food, drinks and tobacco fell by 0.5% in June, while non-food products, excluding automotive fuel, declined by 0.4%. Automotive fuel sales in specialised stores increased by 1.5%.
Across the EU, food, drinks and tobacco sales were down 0.4%, non-food products declined by 0.3%, while automotive fuel sales increased by 1.7%.
On a country-by-country basis, Finland recorded the largest monthly decline in retail trade volumes, with sales falling 1.5%, followed by Romania (-1.2%) and Germany (-1.1%). Luxembourg recorded the strongest monthly growth at 2.5%, ahead of Portugal (1.7%) and both Croatia and Sweden (1.5%).
Revised figures for May
Eurostat also revised its May figures upwards. Monthly retail trade growth for May was revised from 0.2% to 0.4% in the euro area and from 0.5% to 0.6% in the EU.
Annual growth for May was also revised higher, from 1.6% to 1.9% in the euro area and from 1.9% to 2.1% across the EU. Read more here.
